Pink for October

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, my blog has gone pink for the month. I’m doing this for several reasons:

  1. In memory of my cousin Patricia who died from breast cancer.
  2. In memory of my dear friend Jerry who passed away earlier this year from breast cancer.
  3. In honor of my friend Jennifer who is a breast cancer survivor.
  4. In honor of my coworker Paulette who is currently battling breast cancer.

If you would like to see other sites that have gone Pink for October, please visit their website at http://www.pinkforoctober.org.

If you missed my post from a few days ago, please check it out. It contains very important breast cancer information every woman should know!

UFO sighting!

BeckySC over on the Let’s Stitch blog challenged all of us to pull out our oldest UFO this week and work on it. I actually have two UFO’s about the same age (both started within a two week period of Sept. 2005) that I’m hoping to work on this week.

The first is Celtic Christmas by Lavender & Lace. I pulled her out yesterday and worked on her for a couple of hours. Even though it’s a bit difficult to see, I feel like I made good progress on her since I got some of the missing portions of her skirt filled. Here’s a couple of photos.

Before (as of January 2007):

After (as of yesterday:

I have to say, after seeing these comparison photos, it makes me really glad I recently purchased a new digital camera. LOL It shows the colors much more accurately than the first photo since I am stitching this on a cream linen.

My other UFO project that I’m hoping to work on some this week is Rosemarkie by Long Dog Designs. I love this project so much, but about all I have left is the backstitching. Have I mentioned just HOW much I detest backstitching? I.hate.it. Here is my most recent progress photo of Rosemarkie. I’ll post an updated one later in the week after I work on it as well.

Before (as of February 2007):

Weekly Training Schedule

As I posted earlier this week, my friend Tracy and I have decided to do a half marathon together next June. We’ve registered for the Rock n’ Roll Seattle Half Marathon. Tracy is going to walk it and I’m going to probably do a combination of walking & light jogging. Today starts our 39-week training plan.

I’ve decided to post my training schedule here each week to help hold myself accountable for actually following it. lol If you want to see the full schedule, you can find it here. So, here’s the schedule for this week:

Sunday Off
Monday 1 mile in 17 mins (3.5 mph)
Tuesday 1 mile in 18 mins (3.3 mph)
Wednesday 1 mile in 17 mins (3.5 mph)
Thursday 1 mile in 18 mins (3.3 mph)
Friday 1 mile in 17 mins (3.5 mph)
Saturday 1.5 miles in 30 minutes (3.0 mph)
Weekly total: 6.5 miles

Since Sunday is an off day for the duration of the schedule (gotta love a schedule that STARTS with a rest day lol ), my goal is that each Sunday from now until the race, I’ll post a recap of how I did completing the previous week’s training. I’ll also post my schedule for the upcoming week.

News Every Woman Should Know

I know breast cancer awareness month doesn’t start for a few more days, so I’m a little early with this post. I just learned of a new type of breast cancer today that isn’t detected through looking for lumps via self-exam or by mammograms. This is an important enough issue, especially given I lost a dear friend earlier this year to breast cancer, that I didn’t want to wait until October 1 to share it.

Please, take the 6 minutes to watch this video. It could save your life.

Friday SAT Progress

I actually managed to stitch the 4 of the 6 hours for the Let’s Stitch Friday night Stitch-a-Thon (SAT). Woo Hoo! I don’t remember the last time I’ve done that much consecutive stitching at home. About the only time I sit & stitch for that long in a single sitting is when I’m in a class. lol

As planned, I spent the time working on my Halloween Fairy by Nora Corbett. I really feel like I made some great progress on her. Here’s my SAT before & after pictures (click image for larger version):

I’m hoping to get in some more stitching time tonight. I’ll be working on my Hannah Beeby 1816 SAL piece. It’s been sitting idle for far too long.

50 Ways to Cut 100 Calories

50 Easy Ways to Cut 100 Calories
Lose Weight Without Deprivation
By Emily Vale, Staff Writer

Cutting calories may seem like a daunting task, especially when you’re trying to cut hundreds of calories each day to lose the recommended 1-2 pounds per week. Will you go hungry? Will your meals taste like cardboard? Will you have to give up your favorite foods?

Don’t worry. When you make small changes, the only difference you’ll notice is a drop in the scale! Keep in mind that cutting calories can involve smart substitutions or changes in portion sizes, too. Just remember, start small and work your way up to a new – and healthier – way of eating.
