PhotoHunt 193: Twelve

I immediately thought of clocks when I saw the theme was “Twelve” for this week’s .

This is a chiming clock tower at the gas station where I normally fill up my tank. Yeah, it always strikes me as odd as well. I can think of no reasonable explanation why a gas station would need a clock tower that chimes on the hour and half hour. =P

PhotoHunt 192: Fast

I’m a week late getting my entry posted. I was still on vacation last week when the topic was posted and then promptly forgot all about it when I got home due to the holiday. I’ll try and get my entry up for this week’s subject in the next few days. Anyway, here is my entry for PhotoHunt 192: Fast.

This is a photo at the finish line of the 2008 Ironman 70.3 California. The race is comprised of a 1.2 mile swim, followed by a 56 mile bike ride, then finished off with a half marathon (13.1 mile) run. After nearly 4 hours on the course, it came down to a virtual photo finish for the men. American Andy Potts (on the right) managed to beat Australian Craig Alexander by a mere 3 seconds! If you look closely, you’ll notice that Andy is completely airborne in this shot.

I was at the race that day because 1) I’m a bit of a triathlon buff and hope to enter a sprint distance race myself some day, and 2) I actually worked the event as a volunteer. Here are a couple of other photos I snapped that day as well.

Australian Michellie Jones on the run course. She finished 4th for the women.

Ornament Exchange

Since Corinna posted a comment letting me know that she received her ornament from our Fair & Square exchange, I am able to share a photo of it now. I combined the front & back views into a single pic.

The design is by Shepherd’s Bush and is called “Joyful Night”. It’s from the 1998 edition of the Just Cross Stitch magazine annual ornament issue, but also appears in their 10th anniversary collection book.

Even though finishing is not included in a typical Fair & Square exchange, Corinna and I agreed between ourselves to do the finishing for this round. It worked out wonderfully because this way we were able to enjoy our ornaments this year. Otherwise, we would have needed to finish them ourselves after receiving the squares and then wait for next Christmas to roll around to enjoy them. lol

I did the finishing for the ornament while I was on vacation up in San Francisco with my friend Tracy. Even though she’s a scrapper at heart, she also stitches. She recently asked me to teach her how to do ornament finishing, so I took the opportunity of finishing this one to show her. )

This was my first time making a two-color twisted cord. I was pleased with how it turned out. It’s not very easy to tell from the photo, but I used the same two colors for the cord what were the stripe colors in the hat in the design.

That’s it for now. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas yesterday. Until next time …

Merry Christmas!

I just wanted to take a few minutes today to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. I can’t believe another year has come and gone already! I hope everyone has/had a wonderful day filled with joy and peace.

In closing, I thought I would play along on a Christmas meme that I saw on Valerie’s blog.

Eggnog or hot chocolate?
Definitely hot chocolate. I can’t stand egg nog. Actually, growing up in the South, we usually had boiled custard instead of egg not, but I don’t like it either.

Does Santa wrap the presents or leave them open under the tree? I always wrap the gifts.

Colored lights on a tree or white? White, but I still like them to twinkle.

Do you hang mistletoe? No. I live alone, so what’s the point? P

When do you put your decorations up? I haven’t actually decorated for the past two or three years. I do still hang a wreath or some sort of decoration on my front door. That goes up the weekend after Thanksgiving and comes down the weekend after the New Year.

What is your favorite holiday dish? Another Southern thing, cornbread dressing.

Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? When I was a kid, we did because Christmas Eve was always spent with my extended paternal family. When I open presents now varies with whenever I’m able to get together with my friends with whom I exchange presents. Living alone and not having children, Christmas isn’t probably the same for me as for most people.

How do you decorate your Christmas tree? When I put one up, it’s got white twinkling lights, a set of coordinated matte finish Victorian ornaments (burgundy, navy blue, and hunter green), a mish-mash of other ornaments (mostly stitched), and a bunch of burgundy velvet bows.

Snow: love it or hate it? I live in the Los Angeles, so we don’t get snow here. The closest snow to me is a couple of hours away at the mountains. I enjoy going to visit snow, but I wouldn’t want to live with it. )

Can you ice skate? I used to occasionally go ice skating when I was a kid, but I haven’t been in years. So, I’ll go with no.

What is your favorite holiday dessert? My grandmother’s coconut cake, followed closely by her coconut candy that she made using the leftover coconut from the cake.

What is your favorite holiday tradition? I don’t really have any. When I was a kid, it was walking to my paternal grandparent’s house after we had opened all the presents to show/tell them what I got.

Candy canes: yum or yuck? Yuck! I don’t like peppermint.

Favorite Christmas show? Favorite TV show is How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Favorite movie is It’s a Wonderful Life.

I’ll sign off with one of my new favorite Christmas songs. I especially love the homage to Toto near the end. lol If you aren’t familiar with Straight No Chaser, I highly recommend them! It’s hard to beat good a cappella harmony. yes

Until next time … Merry Christmas!

Vacay Update & Project 100 Begins!

I’m back from vacation and had a wonderful time! San Francisco is such a wonderful place to vacation. There are tons of ways to get in activity which helps burn off some of the delicious food that can be found there, too. ) I’m not even going to pretend that I ate properly while we were there, because I didn’t. Everything I did eat was really tasty though. P

Speaking of activity, on Thursday, I actually registered a new personal best for steps taken in a single day. According to the pedometer on my Bodybugg, I logged a whopping 18,427 steps that day! Of course, it didn’t hurt that it was a VERY active day for us. We walked the Golden Gate Bridge in the morning, then wandered a bit down in the Fisherman’s Wharf area for lunch, and then went on a tour of Alacatraz Island that evening.

I’ll share a couple of photos and then get on to the main purpose of this blog entry. If you want to see the rest of my photos, they can be viewed here.

Now, on to Project 100! Now that vacation is behind me, the time has come for the beginning of my Project 100 undertaking. As you may recall from one of my posts earlier this month, I have set a goal for myself to lose 100 pounds between now and January 1, 2011 (1/1/11). As part of that endeavor, I have outlined some criteria to help my reach that goal. To hold myself accountable, I’m going to share those criteria here:

1. Average of 1000 calorie deficit per day

In order to meet my goal, I will need to lose between 1.75 and 2 pounds per week. This means I will need to average a 1000 calorie deficit each day. For those who may not know, one needs a deficit of 3500 calories in order to lose 1 pound. So, if I want to lose 2 pounds per week, that means a weekly deficit of 7000 calories which can be met by a daily deficit of 1000 calories.

How do I plan to meet this 1000 calorie deficit goal? I will be doing it the old-fashioned way of eating less and moving more. Per my Bodybugg program, my AMR (Active Metabolic Rate) is approximately 2550 calories per day. What this means is that I can eat around 2500 calories per day and maintain my current weight due to how many calories my body burns through my day-to-day activities. Since I want that 1000 calorie deficit, I’m planning to reduce my calorie intake down to 1800 calories (750 calorie deficit) and burn the other 250 calories needed through exercise. On the days I don’t exercise, I will drop my calorie intake down to 1550 in order to still meet my 1000 calorie deficit goal.

2. Exercise at least 5 times per week

Some might wonder why I don’t set a goal of working out every day. Well, that’s because I know that the body also needs rest in order to rebuild the muscles I’ll be working. For the few weeks, I will pretty much be doing only cardio in order to get myself going and set a good routine. There will be a bit of strength work since I will be using some of my fitness titles (like EA Sports Active More Workouts) for my Wii console on some days. At the beginning of February, I will add in a basic strength training routine at the gym as well.

3. Early to bed, early to rise

I freely admit that I am a horrible night-owl, so this one may well be the most difficult for me. However, I have heard repeatedly that getting a good night’s sleep is paramount for weight loss, so I want to tackle this one. Sleeps aids weight loss both in giving the body the energy it needs for metabolic function, as well as reducing the amount of stress hormones created. So, my goal during the week will be to go to bed at 11pm and get up at 6am. This will allow me to get 7 hours of sleep (I usually only get between 5-6 hours most nights now), and will also give me time to get in my workout before going to work.

4. Other Misc. Things

Since none of these really warrant a separate entry of their own as they don’t really require explanation, I’m clumping these final items into a single bullet point.

  • Walk around the parking lot at work on my break when weather permits.
  • Drink a minimum of 48 oz. of water per day.
  • Eat at least 5 servings of fruits & vegetables per day.
  • Consume at least 2 servings of dairy products per day.
  • Brown-bag my lunch instead of eating in the cafeteria or going out to eat.
  • Faithfully keep my food journal each day — good, bad, or ugly.
  • Weigh in each Saturday and post results here (unless on travel).
  • Take body measurements every 4 weeks.

I had Tracy take some before photos of me when we were in San Francisco on vacation. I haven’t downloaded them from my camera yet though. I haven’t decided how often I’ll take updated photos, but I’m considering once per month since that’s how often I’ll be taking my measurements.

Ok, I think that’s it for now. If I think of other things, I’ll post them later. For now though, I have to finish this up in order to make my bedtime. )

Until next time …
