A Fresh Start & A New Attitude

As many of you know, I was part of Team Shrinking Jeans that recently participated in the San Diego Rock ‘n Roll half marathon with Team in Training. I spent a good portion of that weekend trying my best to hide from cameras which isn’t easy with that group, let me tell you! lol

The reason for trying to hide was because I so badly hate how my body looks these days. When I had lost weight in the past, I got to the point where I was no longer afraid of cameras which was kind of surprising given I actually never made it all the way to my goal weight. At my lowest, I was still probably 40 pounds from my goal, but I felt comfortable in my own skin back then. I can’t really say that any longer. no

Over the past couple of weeks while I was sick, I spent some time looking through all of the photos everyone on the team took while we were down in San Diego. There were lots of happy memories that came flooding back into my mind, but the biggest nagging pain to me was seeing photos of myself during times when people took a photo I wasn’t expecting, or when someone wanted a photo of me specifically which meant having nowhere to hide. I absolutely abhor where I’ve let myself get back to weight-wise and how I look now. Here are a couple of examples:

The good news is that I didn’t dwell on how unhappy they made me for very long. I decided to use them for motivation instead. I printed a couple of them out and have them hanging on my refrigerator along with a caption saying, “Is this how you want to spend the rest of your life?”

I took this newly-found motivation and decided last Wednesday (July 14) that I just needed a fresh start and a new attitude toward my weight loss journey. I’m so tired of the floundering and overall gaining trend when I’m supposed to be on a weight LOSS journey. So, I wiped the mental slate clean and gave myself a fresh new day one of my weight loss journey.

In the past, I’ve always used my all-time highest weight when showing my weight loss progress. Truth be told, it’s been nine years since I was at that highest weight. I’ve decided it just doesn’t feel genuine or honest to me any longer to use that weight to show my “progress” since I’ve not really had any, at least not in the proper direction. I’ve definitely been on more of an uphill climb which is why it just doesn’t feel honest or genuine to me any more to show a 45-50 pound loss. Yes, I know I have kept that much of the weight off, but I just need to focus on the here and now for a while.

In keeping with this new mindset, I actually did a “reset” at Weight Watchers as well. I hadn’t been to a meeting in a while, so I opted to just start over. I have a brand new weight tracking book, and used my weight last Wednesday as my new starting weight. Yes, I realize these are all just little mind games, but it’s just something I needed to do. I needed to break myself from my perceived past “failures” (and glories) and just move forward from here.

Today was my first meeting since my mindset change last week. I’m thrilled to report that I was down 6.4 pounds. D I not only got my Week 2 bookmark, but I even got a 5 pound gold star to put on it!

I know a good part of that loss is due to the fact that I was on steroids (fighting the upper respiratory infection) for a week right up until the day before I restarted at WW and I was definitely retaining fluids. Actually though, I don’t really care what it’s from because I’m going with it. 8)

I’ve also decided to create a separate progress page to track my weekly results rather than just using the little section in the sidebar as I’ve previously done. This will allow me to include additional information and (eventually) progress charts. I’ll still keep the very basic information in the sidebar, but if you want even more numbers geekiness, be sure to check out the progress page. The link will be available in the menu bar across the top of the page.

Here’s to another great week! Until next time … onward and downward!

Top Fitness Blog 2010

Online Nursing Programs

Wow, I won an award! I guess that means someone actually is still reading my blog. Go figure! lol I was worried that no one would still be here after my extended absence due to being very ill with an upper respiratory infection for nearly three weeks, but I’m back now. )

As for the award, I got an email from the folks at Awarding the Web letting know that my blog was a winner. I was apparently nominated for this award by one of my readers. All of the nominated blogs were then reviewed and scored based on 20 separate attributes by a panel of five judges. When the dust finally settled, my blog was selected as one of their Top Fitness Blog 2010 award winners. )

I just wanted to send out a big thank you to whomever nominated me! I really appreciate knowing someone thought my blog was deserving of a nomination. I also want to thank the judging panel who deemed my content worthy of actually winning this award. It definitely inspires me to keep improving and moving my blog forward. 8)

As I was looking over the list of winners, I noticed that one of my favorite blogs to read was also a winner. Congrats to Jess over at halfofjess.com! If you aren’t familiar with her blog, you should go check it out. yes

Plum Blossom Kimono & Life Update

Amazingly enough, I’m still sick, but think I may finally be rounding the corner to good health again. I’ve literally been sick since July 1. no It initially started as just a summer cold. It then progressed into a sinus infection, so I went to the doctor and was put on antibiotics.

As of Friday (July 9) I still wasn’t feeling well, so I went back to the doctor. After another exam and a chest x-ray, I learned that it had developed into an upper respiratory infection. The doctor was concerned it might turn into pneumonia, so I was put on a stronger antibiotic with a steroid pack booster. I actually felt a LOT worse on Saturday, but I think it was my body finally just trying to get all the crap out of my lungs. Each subsequent day has been a bit better, so I’m hoping by mid-week that I’ll be back to my normal self again free of the hacking cough.

So, what’s the good side to all this illness? I’ve gotten in quite a bit of stitching time. I participated in the July Weekend Stitch-A-Long on Facebook. I decided to pull out my Plum Blossom Kimono to work on it. This was a class I took last summer at my LNS from local designer/teacher, Margaret Bendig. I haven’t worked on it in quite some time, so I thought this SAL would be a good time to give it some attention. Here are my before & after pics showing the progress I made this weekend:

Before (as of Saturday morning):

After (as of Sunday night):

I’m so excited to have all of the outlining done! Doing that much pearl cotton outlining on Congress Cloth is pretty boring, but I made it through. lol Now I’m really for the fun part which is filling in all those little boxes with lots of pretty silks. yes

Of course, the whole weekend wasn’t spent just stitching. There was a lot of studying that happened as well. My college classes started on July 1, so I’m back into the world of having to study. It hasn’t been very fun given I’ve been sick, but I’m doing OK since it’s mostly been a lot of reading so far. I might not have felt the same way if I had been sick and was trying to write papers, too. P

I’m currently in the process of studying for the CompTIA A+ certification exams. I have to obtain this certification for my job per a DoD requirement by the end of the year. The nice thing is I can kill two birds with one stone because I can use the A+ certification to knock out two of my college courses as well (IT Fundamentals II & III). It’s basically an entry-level IT certification, but it’s been long enough since I’ve done basic hardware/software troubleshooting that I’m definitely having to study to brush up on all the various beep codes, printer error codes, etc.

In other personal news, as if I didn’t have enough going on already, I’ve decided to move. I’ve been living in a one-bedroom apartment since my divorce six years ago. I finally decided I’ve had enough of being so cramped and will be moving into a two-bedroom apartment. Not only will I have a larger living room/dining room area, but I’ll finally have a craft room again, too! D

Until next time …

Snow Garden Update

I’m getting very close to yet another finish. This time it’s on Snow Garden from Blackbird Designs. Being sick for nearly a week has clearly been very beneficial to my stitching progress. lol

Here is the progress I’ve made between my most recent update (July 1) and today (July 6):

I can’t believe I’ve made so much progress! I’m doubly amazed when I take into account that I’ve finished two other small pieces during that same time frame. This is absolutely not my usual stitching speed. Go me! 8)

I am a bit perplexed over one aspect of this design. My colors definitely look much different than the model photo, even though I am usually the recommended fabric and fibers. I’ve gone back and double & triple-checked to ensure I used the proper colors in the proper places, and I did. The only elements that really look the same to me are the peacock and the tree on the right side of the design. Some portions of the border are almost completely lost into the linen in my piece. no

This is one of my greatest annoyances about model photos. The finished product just doesn’t always look the same. Even though I still love the design, the colors of mine just don’t pop nearly as much as in the model which is what attracted me to the design in the first place. Oh well, what’s a stitcher to do?

Until next time …
