Recently, the nice folks over at Designer Whey offered me the opportunity as an ambassador for FitFluential to take some of their products for a test drive. I wasn’t completely unaware of the Designer Whey brand since I’ve been using their vanilla Aria protein powder for several years. It’s pretty much a staple item in my kitchen because I love to add it to smoothies, oatmeal, etc. to bump up the protein content. Other than that though, I’d never really branched out and tried any of their other products, so I welcomed the opportunity they gave me to do just that.
Boy, did they ever hook me up?! Check out the amazing box of goodies they sent me to try (as always, click image for a larger view):
I don’t know how much you can really make out what’s in the box, so I’ll list it out for you:
- 12 oz. canister White Chocolate protein powder
- 12 oz. canister French Vanilla protein powder
- 10.5 oz. carton French Vanilla high-protein shake
- 10.5 oz. carton Gourmet Chocolate high-protein shake
- Box of Mixed Berry Protein 2Go drink mix
- Box of Tropical Orange Protein 2Go drink mix
- Box of Lemonade Protein 2Go drink mix
- Two Triple Chocolate Crunch protein bars
- Two Chocolate Caramel Crunch protein bars
- Two Peanut Butter Crunch protein bars
Even though I’d only tried the Aria powder in the past, I was still definitely familiar with the Designer Whey brand. Due to that fact, one of the first things I spotted was their redesigned packaging. I love the new look! Not that there was anything wrong with the black circle logo they featured previously, but I think the new design just looks much more fresh and modern.
I know a lot of people who use protein powders get very creative with them and make all kinds of things like pancakes, muffins, etc. I must admit that I haven’t really done anything that creative with either of the powders yet. The box arrived right during the middle of the time I was so sick, so I pretty much kept things simple and just used the Designer Whey powders in place of where I would normally use the Aria powder. The French Vanilla powder is really tasty in my morning oatmeal! For those of you like me on Weight Watchers, both the French Vanilla and White Chocolate powders are 3 PointsPlus value and 18g of protein per scoop. I use 1/2 scoop in my oatmeal which gives me 9g of protein and is only 1 PointsPlus value.
I did get somewhat creative with the White Chocolate powder. In the recipe section on the Designer Whey website, I found a recipe for an Almond Butter Banana Smoothie. I didn’t actually have any almond butter in my cupboard at the time, so I improvised. Being a Tennessee girl, I decided to pay homage to The King, Elvis, so I modified things a bit and made a Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie In place of the almond butter, I used 2 tbsp of PB2 powdered peanut butter mixed with 2 tbsp water. I did everything else exactly per the recipe. It came in at 7 PointsPlus value for me on Weight Watchers which is more than I would typically “spend” on a smoothie, but let me tell you, this thing was AWESOME! It was so yummy, I’ve actually made it two or three more times since.
I really have to stop and take a moment to give a special homage to the Protein 2Go drink mixes I received. Since I was so sick for several weeks, these things became a lifesaver for me! I knew I needed to be drinking lots of fluids, but there were times when I would run out of juice and just didn’t feel like going out to the store. At those times, I would mix up one of these drink mixes. It gave me something more interesting to drink than just plain water, and gave my body some protein at the same time. Each packet can be mixed with 12-16 oz. of water, contains 10g of protein, and is sweetened with Stevia. They are 1 PointsPlus value per packet on Weight Watchers.
The other item I really want to call out and focus on are the protein bars. Oh. Em. Gee. They are ridiculously delish! I’ve tried lots of other protein bars in the past. It seemed like the ones with the most protein just didn’t taste that great to me, and the ones that tasted good just didn’t have enough protein to justify the calories/PointsPlus for it. All three of the flavors were really tasty, had 10g of protein, and ranged from 160-170 calories. The Triple Chocolate Crunch and Peanut Butter Crunch bars are each 4 PointsPlus value and the Chocolate Caramel Crunch is 5 PointsPlus value.
I may or may not have seriously developed an unholy obsession with the Peanut Butter Crunch flavor. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed all three flavors of the bars, these were far and away my favorite. How bad is this obsession you may be asking? Well, did you know you can “subscribe” to some grocery items on Amazon? Yeah, I subscribe to these bars now. I get a box of 12 bars delivered right to my door each month. Seriously, does it get any better than that?!
All in all, I really liked all of the products I received. Given I’m now a bar subscriber, I’ve definitely branched out beyond the same vanilla Aria powder I’ve been using for years. Sometimes change is definitely a good thing! Once I finish the canisters of powder I have now, I’m definitely going to be trying some of their other powder flavors. I’m especially interested in trying the Vanilla Almond flavor and the Vanilla Praline. They both sound amazing!
Until next time …
